Here's what is new:
Parent Workshop on Tuesday, October 28 from 6 - 7pm. Free childcare will be provide to PS 39 students. New this year: In addition to report cards, all students will have assessment portfolios. What is an Assessment Portfolio? A portfolio is a collection of your child's assessment and written work in all subject areas. It will include:
The Portfolio will provide families with the context connected to the assessments used for report card grades. These portfolios will provide you a comprehensive understanding of how your child is progressing in each content area and will be shared with families several times during the year. What can I do to make my child's portfolio as useful as possible? In order for portfolios to be the informative tools that we intend them to be we feel that it's essential for parents to be fully educated on their contents and how to interpret it. Parents are encouraged to the presentation (click on the image to the left) from our workshop as a guide to understanding their child's portfolio. The big apple crunch is a NYC-wide event that helps to remind everyone about the importance of eating healthy. The goal is to get 1,000,000 New Yorkers to “crunch” an apple at Noon on October 24th (National Food Day). Why apples? Apples are an easy and healthy snack that are grown abundantly in NY State. This event promotes healthy living while celebrating our NYS delicious fruit (we are the Big Apple after all….)
On Friday October 24, we will ask all children to bring in an apple with their lunch. In addition, the cafeteria will be providing apples as part of school lunch. During each lunch period, there will be a brief (excitement building ) announcement and count down for students to “crunch” their apple altogether. Please join us on Tuesday, October 21 at 7pm for our October PTA meeting. The meeting will be in room 103 (music room) and the membership will be voting on the PTA budget for this school year. Free childcare will be provide in the cafeteria for PS 39 students.
The water abatement construction project on our school yard is continuing to progress. The large water retention tank was added to the side yard over the weekend. Once the work is finished connecting this tank this portion will be completed. When the 8th St yard is returned to us, work will begin on the upper playground. We thank our families for their continued cooperation and patience throughout this project.
We recognize the importance of the school yard in community building at our school and would like for everyone to be able to share what little space we have. Due to the construction constraints on the yard, we are requesting that all families using the playground after school leave the yard by 3:15 so that the CBE After School Program can use the space with our students. We hope that everyone will continue to assist in sharing the yard so that all parties have an opportunity to use it. Our PTA is hosting two great ways to shop and support your school...
