"Your Story, Our Story" Project:
A Partnership with the Tenement Museum

PS39 is continuing our partnership with the Tenement Museum on their “Your Story, Our Story” project. “Your Story, Our Story” started in a Brooklyn middle school and has expanded to high school and colleges.  Last year PS 39 was the pilot school for their expansion into elementary school and we are excited to participate again.  This project allows our children to celebrate their unique, rich, family histories.  We know that by sharing our stories we are helping to strengthen our community.

“Your Story, Our Story entries invite us to look back, or look closer, at the ways that our families change over time, and how we define our own American identity through the generations. Objects that evoke sounds, smells, tastes and memories connect us to our family’s immigrant or migrant heritage. At the same time, our quests for these objects also involve a sense of mystery." - The Tenement Museum

Here is a link if you would like to learn more about this wonderful program:

We invite everyone to participate in our project between May 8 - 22:
  1. Share with your child a story about an object that has been passed down or is cherished. It should be an object that represents your family’s immigration or migration story.  You can use the questions on the back of this letter to help tell your story.
  2. Take a picture of that object and print the picture to add to the project card that we’ve included.
  3. Help your child complete the sentence starters on the project card to share the story of your object.
  4. Have your child return their project card to school any time before May 22nd.  The card will be laminated and added to our “Your Story, Our Story” project installation on our schoolyard fence.

“Our shared interest in our own stories, as well as the stories of others, help us piece together our nation’s collective cultural adaptation.” - The Tenement Museum

We’re very much looking forward to the opportunity for everyone in our school to learn more about one another on a deeper level and to share our histories with our greater community.
