First Grade
First Marking Period
Kindergartners looked at Ezra Jack Keats and learned how to look for the shapes in the body. The head is an oval, the neck is a small rectangle, the torso is a larger rectangle and the arms and legs are each made of two long ovals. Hands and feet are like ovals or trapezoids. Looking at generic photos of a standing child to use as a model, they drew self-portraits and put themselves in a place. They drew horizons or floor lines and filled the page with color.

LINE!
Kindergartners
Kindergartners learned that everything can be drawn with curves and straight lines. They explored using watercolor to finish their line and shape samplers.
Grades 1 - 5
Through directed line drawings the children learned how to take the edge of the page into account when they compose. I introduced Mondrian, Rothko and Matt Madden's "20 Lines" to illustrate how artists take an idea, a favorite subject or a self-imposed rule and make variations of the work. They were delighted to see the 20 or more variations produced in one class from the same directions.
Up next: Kindergarten and 1st grade have begun working on painted autumn landscape collages.
Grades 2-5 are learning to draw the figure in an environment.
