Special Education Parent Group
Dear Parents,
Welcome (or welcome back) to PS 39! I’m so excited as we get further into the fall semester to start gathering parents interesting in learning more about our special education community together again.
I am writing to invite you to join PS 39s’ "Special Education Parents Group." For those of you who are new to us, we formed this group three years ago for a number of reasons, but mainly we wanted to have a group where parents of children with learning, emotional and physical differences could come together and support each other. They say that when you have a child with different needs, you are your child’s best advocate. We found that advocating is a lot easier when you have a community behind you. This group IS that community.
For this reason, please join us both on the mailing list and in meetings so that we can help each other ensure that our children thrive. In past meetings, we have hosted the school leadership, special education experts and attorneys, discussed the IEP process and also have used each other for support. It is a great place to share local resources (OT groups, therapists, tutors, etc.) but also just to talk to someone who knows and understands your story. We hope that we can create a school environment that embraces all of our children’s strengths and differences.
This group does not require a large time commitment (we know how busy we all are!) but it is important that we hear from everyone. I just started on the School Leadership Team (SLT) this year and I would like to be a voice and advocate for this group- but I can’t do it unless I hear from you. You are always welcome to email me at b1mchugh@gmail.com for information or even just to get coffee to talk.
Please join our mailing group by clicking here and join us at our first introduction meeting on Thursday, October 17 at 8:30am in the cafeteria.
Best of luck with the start of the year and I look forward to connecting soon.
Sincerely,
Bernadette McHugh
