Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS)
Positive Behavior Intervention Support is a school-wide initiative to maximize academic achievement and behavioral competence. This program serves as a school-wide strategy for helping all students achieve important social and learning goals. We know that when good behavior and good teaching come together, our students will excel in their learning.
The school has established 4 guiding principles: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Prepared. These expectations for all student behavior will be clear throughout our building and playground areas, cafeteria, gymnasium, and classrooms. We will provide a common language for everyone in our building, including students, teachers, and staff.
Our ultimate goal is for all students to enjoy a safer school environment and have more time for instruction. In setting standards of behavior and discipline procedures, PS 39 follows the NYC Department of Education’s Citywide Standards of Discipline and Intervention Measures. Caring School Community (CSC)
The Caring School Community program is a research based K-6 program that builds classroom and schoolwide community. It provides specific lessons and activities that integrate community-building efforts across the school day and throughout the school year.
Class meetings are the core of the CSC program. They offer teachers and students a forum for getting to know one another, discussing issues, identifying and solving problems, and making decisions that affect classroom climate.
Appropriate school attire is a very important daily consideration. Clothing should be comfortable, easy to clean and hazard free.
